The continued joys of home ownership [Mar. 8th, 2005|12:50 am]
[Current Mood | dirty]

When we bought this house, we realized it was going to be a fixer-upper. Nothing majorly wrong, but definatley needing re-decorating. Unfortunatley, some of the ugliness did actually hide real problems. Todays issue to deal with is the stairs; what has become the second most time-consuming issue in the place.

There's a lot of play between the actual stairs and risers, and the boards (I'm sure there's a technical name) that attach to the end points. I suspect this may have been by intent to aid assembly. In order to hold the stairs fast, wooden shims have been inserted to hold them in place. Problem is, the boards used are not perfect, and in at least one spot, the shims were holding more by force of will, rather than any know principle of physics. Mere mortals might be intimidated by this, especially one who had recently dropped 300 bucks to get a working shitter, but lo, not I.

I bought a mitre saw :-D

Who would have thought cutting triangles out of 2x6 could create so much sawdust?!? I have to fight the urge to go and buy some diesil fuel.

On an unrelated note, I have been informed I may be inheriting a canoe. Yes, you read that right, a canoe. As in loaded down with animal pelts/Pierre trudeau in a leather jacket on a lake canoe. I must now become more.... "Outdoorsy". (Yeah, I'm fighting this one really hard. Hard like the apple fought gravity. It's a losing battle.) The kicker was when Mel and I did a geocache in MacGregor Point provincial park in the middle of winter two years ago. At that point, we agreed we really should go camping more. Let me rephrase. We agreed we should go camping. This has yet to happen.
Last summer, we almost went camping at MacGregor, but the joys of shiftwork and life precluded that. Now that we have a canoe, though... Hmm... I really want to go to Algonquin, and have had a secret longing to go to Quetico. I also really want to go touring in a kayak. I like kayaks better, (Comes from having been stuck in a canoe with a crazy during my youth), but the price is right.
Anyone know where I can get SPF 100?

Yeah yeah, so I havn't posted anything in a loooooong time. I've been busy. Lesse, in the past 6 months I have...

- Bought a house
- Made major (non-structural) changes to the inside of said house
- Almost blinded myself with an arc welder (x2)
- Worked week in and week out like a good little wage slave
- Applied to go back to school full time
- Discovered exactly how the capital gains inclustion rate will affect my life (and wallet) this year
- Learned even more about the Windows operating system that I ever wanted to know
- Learned more about a unix variant than I ever thought I would know

ummm... Yeah, that's about all I can think of at the moment

I spent my weekend patching my server-farm. Yay compile from source! Huzzah for shell scripting!

mmmyep, so this is my car.
(Dead image link removed. Maybe another will appear, some day)
This happened canada day weekend, and we still don't have it replaced.

The other guy's insurance company has contacted us, directly, not through our insurance, and wants to meet with us, allegedly to get some information about the accident, exactly what happened, find out if we have any injuries, etc. When asked why we can't do this over the phone, he said they want to get it in writing. Does ths strike anyone else as odd? So far, consensus says we're going to do everything we can to stay a way from this guy, and for the love of god, not sign anything.

Starting out by asking if all tech support agents are trained baboons is not the way to get help.

So there we were [Jun. 17th, 2004|11:20 am]

Standing outside The Rage, and this woman comes up and starts telling Barrett + me how cute she thinks we are. she just won't shut up about the cute thing. At first, we were seriously wondering if she was trying to pick us up, but it just got weirder and weirder. Her parting words were, "if you're going to be hanging around here, you'll be seeing a lot of me." jesus, that frightens me.

So he bought a bar [Jun. 16th, 2004|05:40 pm]
[Current Mood | annoyed]

I just went to see Barrett on my lunch from work - he bought a bar. A couple of weeks ago, actually, but today is the first day I've seen it in daylight. Not much of a difference, considering that it's underground, but hey, it's still neat.

when I got there, the four of them were trying to fit a wooden platform-stage-type thing into a space that is physically too small for it. They did it, but I only saw the last 30 seconds of the effort.

Apparently wednesday is punk night, where they play punk rock. Consensus says it's not music, buy hey, they seem to like it, right?

I was working door for the fashion show the other night. Someone got really good change at some point, 'cause I had a 50 in the box at the middle of the evening, but not at the end, and I know I'm not $50 richer. Either way, there was still a good take from the door, so neither of us are too concerned.

Barrett should try and get on CBC - they have a program called Out Front, where they do audio documentries about people doing interesting things.

Just gota call from the better half - she took one of the cats to the vet today. Harry. He's not actually ours, just kind of on long-term loan while his owner (Marc) is in China, and we get the joy of looking after him. Apparently the cat has an irregular heartbeat, and needs an EKG. this is, most likely, a complication of his ongoing hyperthyroid issue, which has been an adventure in and of it self. I seriously wish we could get the cat on a drug plan, but that'll never happen - at least not without *experimental* drugs...

[Current Mood | geeky]

I thought I would never do it, I swore I wouldn't do it. but here I am, blogging. Crap.

Assume that the generic start of writing introspection has been inserted here.

Didn't people use to use usenet for this sort of thing?
